Embracing Uncertainty: How Human-centered Design Thinking Fuels Future-Ready Strategies for Leaders

The future often acts like a drunken monkey stung by a bee—it is confused and disturbing, and its behavior is completely unpredictable.
— Thomas Chermack, Scenario Planning in Organizations

The COVID-19 pandemic and other unforeseen events have undermined many traditional business planning approaches, leaving organizations scrambling to adapt. To thrive amidst uncertainty, leaders must cultivate a future-ready mindset that embraces imagination and prepares for the unthinkable. From my experience as a leader in the private, non-profit, and governmental sectors, I’ve seen how human-centered design thinking helps organizations make their planning for the future more robust and valuable. By infusing design thinking into business planning processes, leaders can harness diverse perspectives, challenge biases, and foster innovative strategies that are adaptable and resilient. Let’s explore how design thinking fuels future-ready strategies for leaders.

Building Flexibility through Imagination

Planning in the face of uncertainty doesn’t mean giving up. On the contrary, it presents an exciting opportunity to transform planning processes into dynamic and valuable exercises. By encouraging imaginative thinking, leaders can expand their focus beyond the “possible” future and embrace the “unthinkable.” This mindset shift opens the door to envisioning scenarios and preparing for what a recent Harvard Business Review article terms “novel risks.” These risks “arise from unforeseen events, from complex combinations of apparently routine events, and from apparently familiar events occurring at unprecedented scale and speed.” To facilitate this transformation, leaders must create a safe space that encourages open discussions and the identification of potential risks and their consequences.

Overcoming Planning Biases

To truly overcome the challenges of uncertain times, leaders must confront biases that hinder effective planning. A McKinsey & Company study found that organizations can fall prey to biases like “availability bias” and “stability bias,” which limit their ability to consider emerging trends and explore new possibilities. By adopting a design thinking approach, leaders can counter these biases and create an environment that fosters broad debate and diverse perspectives. Design thinking empowers teams to challenge themselves and think outside the box, avoiding the trap of “groupthink” and unlocking creativity.

The Power of Design Thinking

Design thinking, with its customer-centric approach, provides an ideal framework for enhancing strategic decision-making in uncertain times. By leveraging the insights of customers, clients, employees, and stakeholders, leaders can gain a holistic understanding of the business landscape. Design thinking also facilitates scenario planning, allowing leaders to consider the “unthinkable” by envisioning multiple futures and exploring their implications. This iterative process enables continuous refinement of strategies, ensuring ongoing adaptability and agility. Further, a 2019 Forrester Research analysis found that a mature design thinking practice can achieve an ROI between 71% and 107% at the organizational level.

Cultivating a Future-Ready Mindset

Adopting design thinking methodologies not only enhances planning processes but also fosters a future-ready mindset within the organization. By embracing the principles of design thinking, leaders inspire their teams to challenge assumptions, think creatively, and embrace uncertainty as an opportunity for growth. With a future-ready mindset, organizations can navigate complexities and chart a course for success in an ever-evolving world.

In his book The Infinite Game, Simon Sinek said “Those with a finite mindset fear surprises. Those with an ‘infinite mindset’ see opportunity in the unexpected.” As the world rapidly changes around us, I think leaders need to adopt an infinite mindset and recognize the need for a paradigm shift in planning processes to build more future-ready firms and organizations. By nurturing imagination, overcoming biases, and leveraging diverse perspectives, we can craft innovative strategies that are adaptable, resilient, and responsive to change. Embracing design thinking empowers leaders to forge a path towards success and resilience, even in the face of unprecedented challenges.
